The Chief Executive of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), Peter Sturrock, has welcomed today’s announcement by GM Holden about the company’s new Pontiac G8 export program to the United States.
“This announcement is an important boost for the Australian automotive manufacturing industry,” said Mr Sturrock.
“It demonstrates that Australian vehicle manufacturers can design, build and deliver vehicles of outstanding quality and competitiveness, anywhere in the world.”
“This announcement represents an important vote of confidence in Australia’s manufacturing capabilities by a significant international investor.”
“Notwithstanding the sustained strength of the Australian economy and a supportive policy environment, local car makers do operate in one of the most open and competitive markets in the world.”
“As a result, continuing export success is vital for the future development and success of the Australian automotive manufacturing industry.”
“It should be noted that the Free Trade Agreement that Australia has with the United States has reinforced the other competitive advantages for Australian automotive exporters looking to develop new export programs like this.”
“The Australian automotive industry performed very strongly in 2006, with total export sales of around 130,000 vehicles. The FCAI believes that this figure could grow to more than 150,000 vehicles in 2007, with the prospect of further gains in future years.”
“Today’s announcement by GM Holden provides a valuable diversification in the industry’s export base. In particular, it means that Australian automotive exporters are achieving renewed success in the world’s largest automotive market, the United States.”
