With the Easter and ANZAC Day long weekends set to bring a surge in activity on the land, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries is reminding Australians to stay safe off-road.
Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries chief executive Tony Weber said 24 people died using side-by-side vehicles (SSVs) and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) last year.
“Easter is a time when many families head to the bush, the farm or the back paddock, meaning peak time for using ATVs and SSVs,” Mr Weber said.
“But every year we see preventable accidents involving these vehicles, often with devastating consequences.”
Mr Weber said safety must be the top priority, particularly when children or inexperienced users are involved.
“We implore all riders and drivers to wear a helmet, wear a seatbelt, know your vehicle’s limits, don’t carry passengers on single-seat vehicles and never let children ride or drive adult-sized ATVs or SSVs,” Mr Weber said.
The FCAI is directing riders and owners to the dedicated safety resources www.sidebysidesafety.com.au and www.atvsafety.com.au which outline best-practice use, safety checklists, and important age and passenger guidelines.
Key Safety Reminders This Easter:
For SSVs:
- Operators should be at least 16 years of age and ideally hold a valid driver’s licence.
- Never carry more passengers than seats. No one in the cargo area.
- Always wear a helmet, seatbelt, eye protection and appropriate clothing.
- Keep doors and side nets closed. Keep limbs inside the vehicle.
- Don’t drink and drive and avoid sealed roads – stick to off-road use.
For ATVs:
- Only those 16 and over should ride adult-sized ATVs.
- Helmets and protective gear are essential.
- Never double-up on single-seat ATVs.
- Follow manufacturer guidelines and avoid overloading.
- Be especially cautious on steep or uneven terrain.
