Australia’s new car market has bounced back from recent declines with new vehicle sales in June 2014 on par with June 2013 levels. Australian’s purchased 118,309 vehicles last month; only slightly less than the 118,758 sales recorded in June 2013.
Releasing the June 2014 VFACTS figures, the FCAI said private and government buyers led the way with private purchases in June 2014 up 8.6 per cent and government purchases up 5.3 per cent, compared to June 2013.
We continue to see strong growth in the SUV segment with overall SUV purchases accounting for 31.1 per cent of the total market in June 2014—an increase of 2.2 per cent compared to June 2013 figures.
In particular, private purchases of SUVs continue to be strong with June 2014 sales up 25.1 per cent, compared to June 2013; and year-to-date private purchases of SUVs up 14.2 per cent. Small and large SUVs were popular in June with small SUV sales up 14.2 per cent (1,180 units), compared to June 2013; and large SUVs up 12.6 per cent (1,510).
Light commercial vehicles were also a popular choice in June with sales in this segment rising 4.2 per cent, compared to June 2013. Four light commercial vehicles were included in the top ten sales for June 2014 with a fifth coming in at number eleven. These were the Toyota Hilux (4,276 sales), Mitsubishi Triton (4,124), Ford Ranger (3,214), Nissan Navara (2,262) and Holden Colorado (2,241).
New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and the Northern Territory all showed positive growth when compared to June 2013 (1%, 2.2%, 7.6% and 8.3%, respectively). Western Australia and Queensland saw negative growth (2.7% and 6.1%, respectively). Sales declined by 9.1 per cent in Tasmania and 1.1 per cent in Australian Capital Territory.
Overall, the Toyota Corolla maintained the title of top selling vehicle for the month, with 4,648 sales in June 2014. The Corolla was followed by the Toyota Hilux (4,276), the Mitsubishi Triton (4,124), the Mazda3 (4,059) and the Hyundai i30 (3,243).
Toyota maintained the overall lead in market share for June 2014 (17.6%), followed by Holden (10.4%), Hyundai (8.5%), Mazda (7.9%) and Ford (7.4%).
