Australia’s Motorcycle Market (which includes the ATV/SSV market) fell 8.7 per cent in 2018, with total sales for the full calendar year of 95,080.
The 2018 market again remained relatively steady in terms of its composition with road bikes remaining the most popular category and comprising 38.2 per cent of the market. Off-road bikes took a 36.6 per cent share, ATV/SSVs accounted for 20.6 per cent of total sales, with scooters taking an increased share of the total sales with 4.6 per cent.
Among the individual brands, across the market Honda came in at number one with 22,735 sales (23.9% market share) overall, Yamaha in second place with 21,145 sales (22.2% share), Kawasaki in third with 9,376 sales (9.9% share), followed by Suzuki (7,557 sales and 7.9%), and KTM (7,497 sales and 7.9%).
Road bike sales nationally reduced by 9.6 per cent on the 2017 result. Harley-Davidson andHonda tied in the leaders’ position, ahead of Yamaha, and with Kawasaki in fourth. Husqvarna,Indian, Suzuki and Yamaha all saw increased sales in 2018 compared with 2017.
In the off-road bike segment, Yamaha were the highest seller, followed by Honda and KTM. Overall, the off-road bike segment suffered a 6.8 per cent fall on its 2017 result with KTM as the only brand to record an increase in sales in 2018.
The ATV/SSV segment contracted in its overall share of the total motorcycle market (from 21.8% in 2017 to 20.6% in 2018) and as such, also showed the largest segment decline (13.7 per cent) for the year. Polaris was the overall 2018 leader with Honda in second place and Yamaha third. BRP was the only brand to post an increase in overall sales for the year.
In the good news story for the year, the previously shrinking scooter segment was the only segment to show increases. The 2018 result was up by a significant 12.4 per cent, accounting for 4.6 per cent of the overall market (up from 3.7% of total sales in 2017), Honda was the leader, followed by Vespa, with Piaggio in third. Four brands (Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki and Vespa) saw increased sales in this segment.
