FCAI chief executive Peter Sturrock has criticised the Queensland state government for its decision to increase stamp duty on motor vehicle transfers.
FCAI chief executive Peter Sturrock has criticised Queensland Premier Peter Beattie’s announcement that the Queensland state government will increase stamp duty on motor vehicle transfers.
“This is a clear and patent grab for a bit of extra tax revenue by the Queensland government,” Mr Sturrock said.
“It is a poorly thought through tax increase and amounts to an attack on Australian jobs, the manufacturing industry and Queensland families.”
“It defies logic. You won’t get people to buy new cars with enhanced environmental performance and better safety features by making them more expensive.”
“This move only encourages people to hang on to older cars for longer.”
Premier Beattie’s announcement should be contrasted with recent decisions by the Victorian and Western Australian state governments to cut stamp duty on new motor vehicle purchases.”
