The FCAI, the peak body for Australia’s automotive industry, has today released new vehicle sales figures for January 2022.
A total of 75,863 vehicles were sold in January. This represents a 4.8 per cent decrease on January 2021 figures.
“The microprocessor shortage and the pandemic’s impact on supply chains continues into 2022. This is an issue impacting markets all over the globe. Despite this, consumer interest, inquiry, and the fundamental demand for new cars in Australia remains strong,” according to FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber.
“Manufacturers are continuing to work hard to address supply chain and production issues. We are also experiencing bottlenecks in having vehicles processed from some Australian ports. We will continue to work with all parties involved to resolve the issue.”
Sales in New South Wales were down by 9.8 per cent on January 2021 with 23,035 vehicles sold. Victoria decreased 1.6 per cent with 20,397. Queensland declined 1.3 per cent with 16,423. Western Australia decreased 7.8 per cent with 7,578. South Australia declined 2.2 per cent with 5,170. Tasmania improved by 15.4 per cent with 1,468. The Australian Capital Territory was down 9.7 per cent with 1,175. The Northern Territory decreased 13 per cent with 617.
Toyota was the market leader in January 2022 with 15,333 vehicles sold. Mazda followed with 9,805. Mitsubishi took third place with 6,533. Fourth place was taken by Kia with 5,520 and Hyundai came in fifth with 5,128.
Toyota’s Hilux was the highest selling model with 3,591 sold. Ford’s Ranger came in second with 3,245. The Mazda CX-5 took third place with 3,213. Mitsubishi’s Triton was in fourth place with 2,876 and the Toyota Prado came fifth with 2,566 units sold in January 2022.
